Ljova and the Kontraband (The Kennedy Center)

Ljova and the Kontraband

Ljova and the Kontraband plays chamber-jam music for the “remix generation.” Led by film composer, arranger, and violist Lev Zhurbin (Lyova), this New York City–based ensemble blends chamber music, gypsy melodies, jazz, and tango rhythms. Backed by accordion, bass, and percussion, Lyova’s compositions dazzle with intricate textures, odd rhythms, and lilting melodies. Since their 2006 debut, Lyova and the Kontraband have played at MOMA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. A rising composer and instrumentalist, Lyova has played with string quartets, jazz combos, and Gypsy bands.
