Arpex (The Kennedy Center)

Arpex

Arpex, a conjunto de arpa grande (big harp ensemble), formed in Atwater, California in the 1990s. Arpex members include group founder Miguel “El Pollo” Prado Mora (arpa grande), Arnoldo “Chino” Galván Segura (violin), Román Isabel “El Coyote” Ramos Gómez (guitarra de golpe), and Rafael and Javier Valdovinos Acevedo (vocals). Smithsonian Folkways Recordings released Arpex’s ¡Tierra Caliente! Music from the Hotlands of Michoacán in 2006 as part of the "Tradiciónes/Traditions" recording series, a component of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage's Nuestra Música project that explores Latino culture through music in recordings and Smithsonian Folklife Festival programs. Smithsonian Folkways Director Daniel Sheehy says, "When I first heard them, Arpex really caught my ear. The musicianship is top notch, and the Valdovinos brothers are incredible vocalists.
