Pianist and composer Michel Camilo made his Carnegie Hall debut with his trio in 1985 and id a prominent figure worldwide. In December 1987 he conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic in works of Rimsky-Korsakov, Beethoven, Dvoøák and Camilo's own composition, The Goodwill Games Theme, which won an Emmy Award. He was musical director of the Heineken Jazz Festival in his native Dominican Republic from 1987-1992. His early jazz albums, Michel Camilo (Sony, 1988) On Fire, On the Other Hand (1990) and Rendezvous (1993) were best sellers. His Caribe was recorded by Katia and Marielle Labeque, and also by Dizzy Gillespie in 1991.
