Kingsford E.S. Choir (The Kennedy Center)

Kingsford E.S. Choir

Achievement, resilience, and a commitment to excellence are the traditions carried by the high performing students of the Kingsford Elementary School Choir of Mitchellville, MD. Started in 2007 by Reuben Burrows, the choir quickly began to flourish. Consistently scoring superior ratings at various choral festivals, the KES Choir earned the attention of the Washington Post and The Prince Georges County Gazette-Bowie Star last year for their incredible victory in a national competition where the students, ranging from fourth grade through sixth grade, competed victoriously in the middle school/junior high school division. Students in the choir volunteer an hour after school, once a week, in addition to their lunch and recess times each day to rehearse. Learning and performing difficult choral repertoire in various languages, including Hebrew and Latin, students in the choir also spend a great deal of time understanding the intricacies within each song’s composition including mathematics, word etymologies, personal expression, and the relationship of the music to past and current world events.
