American tenor Carl Tanner begins the 2013-14 season as Radames in Aida at Pittsburg Opera-opening the season-a role he previously sang at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, Staatsoper Hamburg, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Edmonton Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden and with the Minnesota Orchestra (c: Andrew Litton). He travels to Washington National Opera to make his debut in the role of Captain Ahab in Moby-Dick and later returns to England's Grange Park Opera to appear in the title role Peter Grimes in a new production, and also to revive the role of Hermann in Pique Dame, a role he inaugurated with great acclaim last season.
Future season appearances include return engagements at The Metropolitan Opera and at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Recent successes include Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West at Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liege and Cavaradossi in Tosca at Deutsche Oper Berlin, a role he previously sang at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Greek National Opera and in his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He opened the Metropolitan Opera's Aida to great public and critical acclaim, and travelled to the UK to make his debut as Hermann at Grange Park Opera. The artist joined the roster of the Bolshoi Theatre as Calaf in Turandot, a signature role and one he has sung at Gran Theatre del Liceu Barcelona, Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Hamburg, in both Florence and Tokyo with Zubin Mehta, and before an audience of 100,000 at the Metropolitan Opera's Opera in the Park in Central Park.
Carl Tanner made his debut as Canio in I pagliacci at Teatro San Carlo Napoli, a role he went onto sing at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and in Hamburg (in a double-bill alongside Tiriddu in Cavalleria Rusticana), Dresden, La Monnaie and at New York City Opera. Dresden's Semperoper was also the scene of the artist's debut in 2010 in the title role Otello and Manrico in Il Trovatore (a role he also sang at Washington National Opera, and at Bregenz Festival recorded for DVD), while in Buenos Aires at Teatro Colon he debuted as Luigi in Il Tabarro. Season 2010-11 saw his Metropolitan Opera house debut as Dick Johnson in Fanciulla del West, a role he also sang at the Edinburgh Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and at Carnegie Hall.
In 2009 the artist appeared for the first time as Des Grieux in Manon at Opera de Las Palmas. In the same season, he debuted at the Paris Opera as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. He appeared as Don Jose in Carmen with Zubin Mehta in Florence, at Rome Opera, in Hamburg and for his La Scala Milan debut, and as Enzo Grimaldo in La Gioconda at Deutsche Oper Berlin and at Teatro Real Madrid. Other highlights of the artist's career include his appearance in the title role for Samson et Dalila with Olga Borodina in Amsterdam at the Concertgebouw, a role he later sang at Washington National Opera with Placido Domingo on the podium; the title role Andrea Chenier in Tokyo, the role of Rodrigo in Luisa Miller at De Vlaamse Opera, and the title role Edgar with Orchestre de Radio France in Paris.
On the concert stage, Mr. Tanner has performed as soloist with many symphony orchestras, including the St. Louis and Atlanta Symphonies, and the Roanoke and West Virginia Symphony orchestras in Verdi's Requiem. He has recorded Puccini's Edgar (title role) and the role of Menalaeus in Richard Strauss' Die ägyptische Helena with Deborah Voigt. In November 2006, the artist released his CD of Christmas songs entitled Hear the Angel Voices.
Carl Tanner was inducted as a National Patron of Delta Omicron, an international professional music fraternity on August 8, 2005, and received an Honorary Doctorate in Music from his alma mater, Shenandoah University in 2009.
