Ankush Kumar Bahl

Indian American conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl is currently in his second season as the assistant conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra in addition to working as an assistant to Kurt Masur with the Orchestre National de France. This past January Mr. Bahl made his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to wide acclaim. Filling in on short notice for Kurt Masur, Bahl conducted two performances featuring Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Mr. Indian American conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl is currently in his second season as the assistant conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra in addition to working as an assistant to Kurt Masur with the Orchestre National de France. Filling in on short notice for Kurt Masur, Bahl conducted two performances featuring Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Mr. Bahl is also the proud recipient of both the 2011 Sir Georg Solti Career Assistance Award and the 2009 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Scholarship.

Mr. Bahl has twice been praised by the New York Times, when he participated in the Kurt Masur Conducting Seminar in 2009, and also when he made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2005. Recent seasons have included multiple performances with the National Symphony Orchestra (at the Kennedy Center), as well as concerts with the National Opera Orchestre de Nancy, the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the New Amsterdam Symphony, and the Indianapolis Symphony. This coming season he will make his debuts with the Little Orchestra Society (New York City) and the Copenhagen Philharmonic. Formerly the music director of the New Jersey Youth Symphony, Mr. Bahl has also worked as an assistant or cover conductor with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Youth Symphony. In addition to regularly working with Maestro Masur at the Orchestre National de France, Mr. Bahl has also been fortunate to do so at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Bahl received a double degree in music and rhetoric from the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and completed his master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the Manhattan School of Music with teachers Zdenek Macal and George Manahan. Mr. Bahl’s mentors and primary conducting teachers have included Kurt Masur, Christoph Eschenbach, Kenneth Kiesler, Alasdair Neale, and David Milnes. He has also been fortunate to participate in master classes or workshops with Sir Colin Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas, David Zinman, David Robertson, James Conlon, Sergiu Comissiona, Gunther Schuller, Gustav Meier, Larry Rachleff, David Effron, Michael Stern, and Jorma Panula.
