La Contundencia Chirimía

La Contundencia Chirimía formed in 1985 in Quibdó, a city on the in the region of Chocó on the Pacific Coast of Colombia. La Contundencia Chirimía is renowned in Colombia for playing chirimía, an up-tempo genre of music played by an ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussion instrumentalists. The original members included Oscar Salamandra, the group’s founder and clarinet player, Nieva j. Moreno Becerra on saxophone, Leon Valencia Valencia on Euphonium, Abel Murillo Mosquera beating the drums, Wilson Cuesta Hovos also on drums, and Carlos Borromeo Cuesta hitting cymbals. La Contundencia Chirimía began as classical instrumental ensemble performing traditional rhythms of the Colombian Pacific and neighboring regions.
