American mezzo-soprano Julia Mintzer is in her first year of WNO’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. She recently made her WNO debut in the premiere performance of the American Opera Initiative and also sang Hansel in Hansel and Gretel. For the 2013-2014 season, she joins the Semperoper in Dresden, singing Mercedes, Zweite Dame, and Flora, among other roles In 2012 she sang the title role in La tragédie de Carmen with Dayton Opera before joining the Apprentice Program at Santa Fe Opera. She has recently been heard in Handel’s Messiah with Boston Baroque, Mozart’s Requiem at the Washington National Cathedral, and as Stephano in Roméo et Juliette with Dayton Opera. She was a New England regional finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and a Wolf Trap Studio Artist. She is a graduate of The Juilliard School, where she sang the title role in The Mother of Us All; and the Boston University Opera Institute, where she performed Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti, and the title role in Thérèse Raquin. Other engagements include Meg Page with the Crested Butte Music Festival, Zulma and Isabella (cover) in The Italian Girl in Algiers with Boston Midsummer Opera, Rachmaninoff songs with the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, Handel’s Messiah with Seraphic Fire, and La tragédie de Carmen with the Institut Canadien d’Art Vocal and the Hot Springs Music Festival.
