Paul Tazewell

The work of American costume designer Paul Tazewell was last seen at WNO in Porgy and Bess (2005 and 2010), a production that was also seen at LA Opera and San Francisco Opera. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut with last season’s production of Gounod’s Faust. He has also designed costumes for Faust produced at English National Opera, Magdalena for Théâtre du Châtelet, Margaret Garner for MichiganOpera Theatre, Little Women for The Glimmerglass Festival and New York City Opera, and Treemonisha for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Broadway credits includeMemphis (Tony nomination); A Streetcar Named Desire (Tony nomination); Jesus Christ Superstar (revival); Magic/Bird; In the Heights (Tony nomination); Guys and Dolls; The Color Purple (Tony nomination); Elaine Stritch at Liberty; Caroline, or Change; A Raisin in the Sun; Lombardi; The Miracle Worker; Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk (Tony nomination); On the Town; Def Poetry Jam; Drowning Crow; Hot Feet; and The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm. He has received numerous awards and honors, including four Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Costume Design, the Lucille Lortel Award, the Princess Grace Award, and the Irene Sharaff Award.
