Veronneau

Veronneau is an acoustic, song-based group which plays jazz, bossa nova, gypsy jazz, and swing. Ms. Véronneau sings in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, lighting up the stage and engaging the audience with her vocal interpretations. The acoustic guitars of Ken Avis and David Rosenblatt, combined with Pete Walby’s percussion, provide the rhythm, harmony and energy to propel the music forward.

Versatile Quebecoise vocalist Ms Véronneau is well known for her warm and compelling voice and her love of powerful melodies. Her solo album, Something Cool – a collection of jazz standards, pop, and blues – attracted praise. Her appearances with the infamous Geneva based doo-wop group, Les Horribles Cernettes have won her international media attention. A classically trained singer, Ms. Véronneau brings a seemingly effortless technique to any genre she embraces. She has appeared in North America and Europe and records as a solo artist, a session vocalist and with her own group.

Ms. Véronneau met and performed with her musical soul mate, British singer/guitarist Ken Avis in Switzerland before moving to the U.S. Mr. Avis has devoted himself to exploring blues, jazz and roots music. A former vocalist with the W.C. Handy Award winning Otis Grand blues band, he has performed throughout Europe and the U.S. with various bands.

Three years ago, they added guitarist Mr. Rosenblatt and drummer Mr. Walby to the mix. Mr. Rosenblatt developed his love of Brazilian acoustic guitar as a child living in Rio de Janiero. He subsequently crafted his sound in Brazil and San Francisco with study and live performance. He has contributed compositions to both of the band’s recent albums.

Washington, D.C. drummer Pete Walby is steeped in bossa nova, jazz and sartorial elegance. Originally from Monterey, California, he lived in the Middle East before returning to the Washington, D.C. area.

Veronneau has two popular recordings. Their 2011 album Joie de Vivre - Joy of Living, rose to number nine in the World Music category of Jazzweek’s radio charts.

Following a year of research, Veronneau released Jazz Samba Project in 2012. Featuring samba and bossa nova with enticing new arrangements, it was unveiled at All Souls Unitarian Church as part of the Golden Anniversary of the Jazz Samba recording by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd – the same 1962 recording that popularized Brazilian music around the globe. The new disc charted immediately. The band is ideally suited to celebrating samba and its derivatives. Since its inception, the band has collected favorite tunes from around the world, winning praise from critics and fans from over 100 countries.
