The Buck Creek Jazz Band (The Kennedy Center)

The Buck Creek Jazz Band

The Buck Creek Jazz Band was formed in 1977. It got its start by playing Sunday afternoon parties at Fred and Anna WhalerÆs house on Buck Creek Road in Temple Hills, Maryland. The band is made up of seven musicians who play in the style of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and other early New Orleans musicians. Their intention is not to copy the sound of these early musical pioneers but to apply their instrumentation and techniques to a variety of tunes that span the 20th century. The band has appeared at every major traditional festival in this country, including the Kool Jazz Festival in Washington, D.
