Lester Chambers

Lester Chambers of the Chambers Brothers plays and sings a distinctive blend of rock and R&B-infused gospel soul. The Mississippi-born Chambers Brothers were the first act to bring Southern Gospel music to rock audiences in the early 1960s. Their fusing of rock's electric energy to gospel roots produced such classic hits as "Time Has Come Today," "People Get Ready," "Can't Turn You Loose," and "Love, Peace and Happiness." Born and raised in Mississippi, Chambers grew up on a steady diet of rural blues and the new hybrid of gospel and rock 'n' roll called rhythm and blues. When he and his three brothers moved to Los Angeles with their family in the late '50s, Chambers was exposed to the urban R&B phenomenon which dominated local radio at the time.
