CityDance Ensemble

CityDance Ensemble, "the preeminent modern dance company in Washington"(The Washington Times), seeks out dancers and composers with wide-ranging backgrounds and exceptional talent, along with the finest choreographers, including the most experienced and respected artists here and abroad, as well as gifted newcomers, to produce concerts that are of "a uniformly high level of artistry and excellence”(The Washington Post). CityDance has performed in virtually all of Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland's leading venues, as well as Richmond, VA, Philadelphia, PA, to critical acclaim and sold-out houses. In 2002, the company had an unprecedented trip to St Petersburg, Russia for a teaching residency and performance at the world-famous Maly Theater. Among its most important efforts bringing praise as a "brave and talented troupe willing to take risks"(The Washington Post) are the Original Series, which commissions live and original scores by leading area composers and musicians; the Legacy Series, which restores and restages works from the past; and FilmWORKS which uses the advances in digital technology to capture dance on film that is more than a mere imitation of live performances (FilmWORKS will have its first evening of "dance on film" at Visions Cinema, Washington, DC on June 17, 2003). CityDance Early Arts, with its year-round program teaching and performing to thousands of children, and special commitment to our under-served neighborhoods, has become this regions largest program of its kind.
