One of the definitions of a phantasm is “imaginative conception,” and it’s this term that best describes Grupo Fantasma. Their creative conception successfully blends influences and imagination into a cohesive whole; one which consists of corrida lyrics, no nonsense cumbia de la frontera, aggressive Fania-esque salsa, Afro-funk, and the modern sensibility of Jamaica’s dancehall sound.
Fantasma has packed some of the most reputable venues in the United States and Mexico on word of mouth and industry hype alone. All ten members have embarked on several tours without the support of any label or booking agency. The band has shared the stage with musical legends such as Los Lobos, Flaco Jimenez, and KRS-One, and was invited to provide music for Ralph Nader’s first trip to Texas since the 2000 presidential campaign.
