This bracelet was given to Jackie Kennedy for her birthday on July 28, 1961. It was a gift from her mother and stepfather, Janet and Hugh D. Auchincloss. Jackie was very close with her step-siblings, and was just as close with Hugh, who walked her down the aisle in her wedding to JFK.
At the time, it was not appropriate to wear jewelry with a lot of sparkle during the day. This bracelet could have been worn for day or evening, as it has two sides. Jackie would wear the simpler side facing out during the day, and could turn it around to show the diamonds with her evening wear on formal occasions.
The original bracelet was probably 17-18 karat yellow gold, but when the fashions changed in the early 1970s, Jackie had the bracelet plated in platinum.
