In 1949, RCA introduced the first 45 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) records to compete with the larger 78 RPM vinyls. The 45s were made with a larger hole to accommodate easier play by jukeboxes, so individuals needed these plastic snap-in adapters for their home record players with their thinner spindles. The heyday of the 45 was in the 1960s with the onset of rock and roll. Typically one song would be pressed on to each side, often the song on the back, or "B" side as a track not available on the full-length album to encourage additional sales. Slowly, sales gravitated toward the full-length album and 45 sales waned. Today, most 45s are produced only by independent record labels. Item Price: $7.00 Member Price: $7.00 |
