Tell a Friend
In July of 1960, John F. Kennedy received his nomination to run for President. He knew that he would never have received the nomination without Jackie’s help during the campaign, so he went to Tiffany’s to purchase a thank-you gift for her. Knowing that her birthday was coming at the end of July, he bought a coordinating pair of bracelets and gave them both to her at the same time.
One of the bracelets had stones which were recently discovered from Tanzania. Then known as “purple-hued sapphires”, Tiffany renamed them “Tanzanite” in 1969. Jackie was especially pleased with the design of these bracelets, as she had a mild metal allergy. As her days were long and she had to wear her jewelry all day, the open mesh of the bracelets would allow her skin to breathe without reaction.
