Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, wanted to host an annual social event that would be a “must-attend” among the rich and famous. In 1966, he organized a Black-and-White Ball at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. He knew that if he could secure the attendance of Jacqueline Kennedy and her sister, Lee, all of the other big society names would attend as well. His rule was to only wear all black or all white. Each guest was given the opposite color mask upon entering the ball, to be removed at the end of the night.
