Jacqueline Kennedy had many sets of pearls, and all of them were faux pearls. Surprisingly, she did not own any strands of precious pearls in her entire collection. This necklace was inherited from her mother and is believed to have been strung between 1914 and 1924. This strand was designed by Coco Chanel, who believed that the clasp is an integral part of a necklace’s design and should be worn where it could be seen.

A modern addition to the history of this necklace came from First Lady Michelle Obama. She borrowed the original necklace from the National Archives in 2010 to wear in her official White House portrait.


Original: Czech glass faux pearls, base metal clasp.
Replica: Hand-knotted silk cords carry Czech glass hand-painted pearls.
Rhodium-plated art deco clasp, Swarovski crystals.
The inner length of the necklace measures 18 inches.
