In August of 1963, John and Jackie lost their newborn child Patrick. By all accounts, this experience drew the couple much closer, spending much more private time with each other and their children. As they healed from this great loss, John became optimistic about the future, particularly about his life spent with Jacqueline.
Jacqueline Kennedy Collection
In October, John decided to order an extra special gift for Jackie for the upcoming Christmas holidays. He visited Van Cleef and Arpels in New York and ordered a suite of kunzite jewelry—a ring, earrings, and a pendant necklace. He knew Jackie loved pink, and felt that the stone's dynamic color captured his new optimistic spirit.
The ring was delivered to the White House in early November for John’s approval and was the last gift President Kennedy would ever give to Jackie—she received it after his death. It was her most cherished piece of jewelry. The pendant and earrings were made but never delivered to the family. These replica earrings were cast from the originals, but Jackie never saw them, and likely did not know that they existed.
