This illustrated biography of the inventor and captain of the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor depicts Swedish immigrant John Ericsson as a visionary inventor. The only thing keeping him from huge successes with a fire engine, a fast railway engine, and a screw propeller, the book tells us, was the shortsightedness of the men who couldn't see the value of them.

Years before the Civil War, Ericsson had invented an iron-covered ship with a gun turret, but no one was interested—until another ironclad builder saw his design and recommended it over his own to a navy committee.

Andrew Glass illustrates the book, for readers 6 to 10, with watercolor cartoons.
