After her parent's bitter divorce, Jacqueline Bouvier moved with her mother and sister into her new step-father's home, "Merrywood", Hugh D. Auchincloss' Georgian mansion in McLean, Virginia. 

During World War II, rationing prevented even the wealthy from spending or obtaining lavish items. As most luxury goods were usually purchased in Europe and unavailable due to war rationing, her mother Janet gave Jackie her own Chopard watch with a white leather strap, which Jackie dyed red.
