This Egyptian-style bracelet ties together two of Jacqueline Kennedy's personal passions: Egyptian culture and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1965, the nation of Egypt planned to build the Aswan High Dam, which would submerge thousands of acres of land—many of which held irreplaceable cultural treasures.
The Temple of Dendur, built in 15 B.C., was one such threatened treasure. Jackie spearheaded international efforts to save many monuments, and as thanks Egypt presented the Temple of Dendur as a gift to the United States. After a massive scramble by the leading institutions in the US, nicknamed the "Dendur Derby", the temple was awarded to The Metropolitan Museum, represented by Jacqueline Kennedy. Happily, the glass roof of the Met’s gallery enabled Jackie to see the temple from her Fifth Avenue apartment. The origin of the bracelet is unknown.
