Jacqueline Kennedy Artists' VesselThis remarkable vessel was a gift to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1972. Her Chinese calligraphy teacher, Yu Younhan, gave her this Ch’ing dynasty piece from his family’s own collection. It was one of a pair thought to have been made around 1780, a period of time known for political stability and both artistic and economic prosperity in China.
The Famille Rose design and dragon-form handle were typical of the area where Younhan’s family originated. It was kept on Jackie’s artists’ table to hold her brushes and pens, she painted and wrote her correspondence in this area. It was later sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $19,485.
