About the Program

Artists:
Four-time Grammy-winning maestro Lorin Maazel travels from New York to Washington to conduct the NSO in an exciting program. One of the musical highlights will be Sir Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor.

A work of incredible passion and intensity, Elgar's Cello Concerto reflects the composer's feelings of disillusionment in England following the end of the First World War. It is his last major work, and one of the most popular and complex works ever written for cello and orchestra.

The performances of Elgar's Cello Concerto will feature rising star cellist Han-Ha Chang. A two-time Grammy nominee now in her mid-20s, Han-Na Chang is also famed for winning Mstislav Rostropovich's International Cello Competition at the tender age of 11.

The program will also include two gems from the French repertoire: Saint-Saëns's "Organ" Symphony – the composer's majestic, romantic, full-orchestra tribute to Franz Liszt – and an enchanting suite from Fauré's incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande.
