What is your favorite piece (or pieces) to play in the orchestra?
Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony.
Do you have a pre-concert ritual or routine?
I warm up on scales and arpeggios and then practice difficult passages.
Describe your favorite NSO moment:
Too many to choose – playing in the Greek amphitheater in Athens with Dorati. The acoustics were magical.
What are three songs or pieces you love to listen to?
Rachmaninoff piano preludes, Schumann Lieder sung by Fischer-Dieskau.
Did you grow up in a musical household?
Yes – both parents played piano and my sister played piano and sang German Lieder. My great grandparents were impresarios in Berlin and founded the Berlin Philharmonic back in the late 1800’s. My great uncle was an opera conductor in Germany.
What did you want to be growing up?
When did you know you wanted to be a professional classical musician?
When I went to New England Conservatory. I majored in composition at first with a minor in violin. I switched to a new violin teacher in my second year and he inspired me to pursue the violin.
What is your favorite thing about living in the DC area?
The incredible variety and wealth of culture and beauty and the government buildings, too.
Where is your favorite DC hangout?
Do you have any pets?
Yes – six cats.
What is your favorite way to spend your free time?
Playing chamber music and playing the piano, which I mostly only do when I am teaching violin and need to accompany my students.
