Feb 24 - 26, 2005 (Pops Concert)  Radio Days
spacer
[ Radio Days.] Emil de Cou , conductor
Five By Design , vocal ensemble

The console radio was deeply interwoven into the fabric of American life during the dark days of World War II. It was the sole source of news from the front and the music of big band broadcasts turned living rooms into make-believe ballrooms. Honoring America’s greatest generation, Radio Days recreates a poignant time capsule of American life during the war years. Combining musical selections with celebrity "appearances" from big band leader Kay Kyser ("Roodlee Doo"), Betty Grable ("It’s Been a Long, Long Time"), and the diva of the tutti-frutti hat, Carmen Miranda ("Tico, Tico"), Five by Design has meticulously crafted a musical retrospective of radio’s golden age. So climb aboard the "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" as the NSO Pops takes its audiences on a glorious ride over the airwaves. Part of the Kennedy Center festival A New America: The 1940s and the Arts.

Mar 26, 2005 (Family Concert) NSO Kinderkonzert: Musical Opposites
spacer
[NSO Kinderkonzert: Musical Opposites.] Kennedy String Quartet

Comprised of all NSO musicians, the Kennedy String Quartet (Holly Hamilton and Jane Bowyer Stewart, violins; James Dieghan, viola; and David Teie, cello) begins this fast-paced program by demonstrating various musical contrasts—from high and low to loud and soft to fast and slow. Then they play excerpts by Beethoven, Shostakovich, and others to show how composers use opposites to express a stunning range of moods and emotions. They conclude with a performance of the lively finale to Dvorák's "American" Quartet. Opposites really do attract!

Come early for hands-on fun with the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo," a project of the Women's Committee of the National Symphony Orchestra.
