About the Showhouse Event
The Women's Committee for the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) chose a selection of Ayrlawn as the site for the thirty-fourth annual NSO Decorators' Show House. The 2006 NSO Decorators' Show House will be open to the public from October 8 through November 5.

More than 25 noted interior and landscape designers selected by the Women's Committee and an advisory panel of noted design professionals will transform the residence showcasing trends in color, furnishings, and fabrics for the NSO Decorators' Show House 2006 opening to the public in October. Bare Bones Days on August 5 and 6, 12 Noon to 5 p.m., will offer visitors an experience of Ayrlawn prior to its dramatic makeover.

"We're delighted this important home will be the site of the NSO Decorators' Show House," says Angela Ganey, chair of the NSO Decorators' Show House 2006. "The elegant home honors our long tradition of showcasing the most interesting and noteworthy residences unique to the greater Washington area."

"We're honored and excited that the family residence has been chosen for the NSO Show House," says daughter Lorena Sevilla-Somoza, one of nine siblings. "We look forward to seeing how the selected designers will interpret the rooms. My parents' home always possessed a presence and quiet elegance. I think of them looking at this event and saying, 'yes, the house is going to look marvelous again.'"

About the Home
The brick Georgian style custom house, designed by Washington, DC architect Alfredo Echevarria and built in 1992, is located in the Kentsdale Estates neighborhood of Potomac, Maryland. Built by Guillermo Sevilla Sacasa, ambassador to the United States from 1943 until 1979, and his wife, Lillian Somoza de Sevilla Sacasa, daughter of the Somoza dynasty in Nicaragua, the house recalls the grand formal style of the Nicaraguan Embassy, home to the Sevilla-Somoza family for 36 years.

Sited on 2 acres, the 4-level, 16,672 square foot, house with separate staff quarters was inspired by the Governor's mansion in New Hampshire and the residenc'olonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Designed as a house for the ages, Ayrlawn was built to an old world standard of quality. The brick exterior received an Honorable Mention from the Masonry Institute for its intricate use of the building material. Solid limestone columns, quarried in South Carolina at the company that supplies the U.S. Capitol Building, define the portico. Throughout the first level, rare Brazilian Kúmuru hardwood floors edged in black granite, hand-fitted custom crown molding, and European crystal chandeliers add further drama and elegance to the generously sized formal rooms and 12-foot ceilings. Executed in antique carved Nicaraguan mahogany, the library evokes the grandeur of the past. The 112 doors in the property are solid core hardwood; marble and granite are used throughout the 9 full and 2 half baths. The heated gunite swimming pool features internal fountains to create a pond-like atmosphere. "I was extremely proud when the house was completed," recalls architect Alfredo Echeverria. "We delivered an extraordinary level of detailing. There were 56 sheets of drawings for the project. It's a magnificent home, the quality of which today would be unmatchable."
