Festivals and Special Events
National Symphony Orchestra Season Opening Ball
This spectacular black-tie benefit, which also serves as the official opening of the National Symphony Orchestra and Kennedy Center artistic seasons, is held each year in September. The 2007 NSO Season Opening Ball took place on September 16, 2007 and began with a thrilling concert featuring Renée Fleming and young Chinese piano prodigy Peng Peng. Following the performance, guests enjoyed an elegant dinner with dancing on the South Plaza of the Kennedy Center. Each year, the evening promises to attract the most prominent business, political, diplomatic, media, and cultural leaders. Net proceeds from the Season Opening Ball support the ongoing artistic, education, performance, and community outreach programs of the Orchestra.
Education
Composer Portraits
The Composer Portrait series provides a unique opportunity for music lovers of all ages to learn more about well-known composers’ lives and music through narration, pictures, and live musical illustrations, culminating in a full performance of a signature piece by the honored composer. Since its inception, Composer Portraits has highlighted renowned composers Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Antonín Leopold Dvořák. These performances attract growing attention throughout the Washington area and continue to receive excellent reviews year after year. The 2008 installment of Composer Portraits will be dedicated to Aaron Copland.
American Residency
This innovative program was created to provide professional quality musical experiences and educational programs to communities across the United States that do not currently sustain a full symphony season. In February 2008, the NSO will embark on a week-long tour of South Carolina, presenting a series of full orchestra concerts, chamber concerts, performances in schools and community centers, master classes, clinics and workshops. The NSO donates all proceeds from its full orchestra concerts back to the local arts community.
National Conducting Institute
This intensive three-week, nationally recognized program is designed to assist conductors with the crucial and often difficult transition from leading academic, community, or part-time orchestras to directing major professional orchestras. Program activities include observing NSO rehearsals, coaching, as well as seminars with administrators from the artistic, development, finance, and other pertinent departments of a full-time orchestra. The program culminates with a special Millennium Stage performance in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall featuring the young conductors leading the NSO. Four participants and up to six auditors are selected to attend the Institute each year and all activities are held at the Kennedy Center.
Summer Music Institute
Established in 1993, the Summer Music Institute is a three-week classical music education program designed for young musicians, ages 14-21, seriously considering orchestral music as a career. Students from around the world are selected by audition, and participate in a wide variety of activities led by NSO musicians, including daily full orchestra and chamber music rehearsals, private lessons, master classes, and additional enrichment sessions. Participants also perform two full orchestra concerts and three chamber music recitals, in addition to observing the Orchestra in working rehearsals and concerts. All students participate in the program on full scholarship.
General Education Programs
Since its inception, the NSO has made quality music education for young people a priority in the effort to stimulate a life-long interest in and appreciation of music among the broadest audience possible. These programs include: Young People’s Concerts, Kinderkonzerts, In-School Ensembles, Young Soloists’ Competition, Summer Music Institute, and Youth Fellowship Program.
