Behind
the Scenes: After the Director and Set Designer decide what stage properties are to be used in a show and what they should be, the prop person is responsible for acquiring them. These can be rented, borrowed, purchased, or fabricated. Purchased items often must be adapted. The prop person reads the script, studies all the production designs and research materials, attends meetings, collaborates with the Director, Design Team, Stage Manager, and cast. She also researches items and materials and attends some rehearsals. All of this is to assure that the props presented to the Director and Set Designer are appropriate.
For Alexander… we decided in an early production meeting that all the props should be oversized, keeping them in proportion with the furniture being built for the show. We also wanted things to be in the style of Ray Cruz's original illustrations, but adapted for the stage. This meant that most items had to be adapted or fabricated.

I
worked very closely with the Director and Set Designer to purchases or
create each prop so that it would look just right and function as need
for the action of the show. During rehearsals, I worked with the Director,
Stage Manager, and actors to refine each thing so it would work and look
exactly as needed. Once the show opens, I maintain the props - repairing,
cleaning and replacing as needed. When the show closes, I strike the props
carefully packing everything for storage. When we begin prepping the tour,
I repair, rebuild, repaint, or replace everything so it will look nice
and withstand the demands of touring. I also make any necessary changes
for the new cast or the tour. I supply enough consumables (props that
get used up each show) for the whole tour as well as back-ups and repair
materials to cover emergencies. I teach the company how to pack, handle
and maintain the props on the road and am ready to send advice or supplies
by phone or mail.
