The written word is a treasured part of Japanese culture, from spare poetry to epic tales. Exploring the many facets of this art form, a number of literary lectures and performances will feature an array of poets, writers, scholars, and musicians.
Japanese Literary Lectures, Readings, and PerformancesEnjoy four literary events: poet Hiromi Ito, "A Thousand Years of Genji," "Tanka: An Ancient Poetic Form in a Modern World," and writer Yoko Tawada with jazz pianist Aki Takase.

Yasuki FukushimaExclamatory poet Yasuki Fukushima, best known for zekkyo (shouted) tanka, performs some of his works. Similar to haiku, but older, tanka poems are 31 syllables long and evoke a moment or mark an occasion with concision and musicality. The performance will include piano accompaniment by Masato Nagahata.
