Arts4Learning Literacy Workshop

Discover a wide variety of engaging art activities to increase students' literacy skills. Workshop participants will explore theater games, visual arts challenges, poetry slams, vocabulary jives, and musical compositions with appropriate adaptations for children with disabilities.

Discovering and Documenting Student Learning Evidence Lecture

Richard Jenkins, VSA Massachusetts (Massachusetts/USA)

Join teaching artist Richard Jenkins in a look at identifying and documenting student-learning evidence within an arts inclusion residency for primary grades. Using specific residency examples, participants will be introduced to detailed strategies. Discuss strategies for identifying and documenting the learning evidence of your own students' artwork. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of student work.

Inclusive Classrooms Using Universal Design for Learning Workshop

Explore both the theory and the practice of Universal Design for Learning, a learning framework easily applicable to any educational setting. Develop materials to expand your own educational practice. The presenters, a teaching artist who specializes in papermaking and bookmaking, and a pedagogical coach from VSA's Community of Practice, will share their experiences in the classroom.

Independent Living 2.0: Voices, Vision, and Visibility Workshop

Using 21st-century skills, including digital filmmaking and social networking, discover how the arts (combined with professional development, skills, and mentorship) can be a catalyst for meaningful social change. The interactive presentation is appropriate for participants of all abilities and learning styles.

Integrating the Arts into the Elementary Curriculum Panel

Examine a successful 10-week elementary school residency program conducted by VSA Michigan designed to provide an integrated arts experience in inclusionary classrooms. Presenters will provide the "how-to" of planning and integrating the arts into the elementary school curriculum as well as the evaluation tools used to measure outcomes.

Stones Floating on Water Multi-Media Performance/ Discussion

Stones Floating on Water is a multimedia performance exploring the nature of disability through personal stories and work. Each piece examines art and transformation, struggle, stereotype, and ostracism, and considers inclusion (what we say “Yes” to) as the difference between ability and disability. After the performance, participate in an interactive discussion on issues raised by the piece and ways to use this model to deepen understanding, create bridges, promote inclusion, and show the considerable value of residencies by teaching artists with disabilities.

Universal Design and the Art Room Workshop

Seize the opportunity to use Universal Design tools while creating two artworks: collage with mixed media and functional art. Experience how manipulating tools and art materials is motivating and empowering. Learn new ideas for reluctant artists, safe and successful cutting, and options for adhesives. During this workshop, appropriate art techniques, materials, Universal Design tools, and resources will also be shared.

Universal Design for Learning in the General Music Classroom Lecture

What does Universal Design for Learning look like in the general music classroom (grades one – six)? Video examples will be shown demonstrating how students with disabilities are integrated into the general music classroom. Investigate strategies for teaching students who are deaf or blind using electronic instruments as assistive technology, such as the SoundBeam.

Explore the systemic challenges and solutions of training programs for artists with disabilities in the United States, Bangladesh, and Egypt. The panel will highlight the experiences of researchers, program administrators, and artists.

Arts-Infused Learning: Inclusive Pathways to Learning Panel

Explore the tools and techniques of arts-infused learning to create accessible environments for students with a variety of learning styles. This panel focuses on the curriculum adaptations that allow all students to share common criteria as well as the lessons students have taught facilitators about learning in multiple ways. A video demonstration of students creating and performing while learning concepts in other content areas will be shared.

Connecting Art, Thinking, and the Diverse Learner Workshop

How do art, critical thinking, and the diverse reader make connections in the primary school classroom? In this session, participants will explore "Artful Thinking," a methodology incorporating visual arts to enhance critical thinking skills in various levels of readers. Workshop includes small- and large-group discussion, reflection of personal experiences, lesson plan development, as well as performance techniques to extend the critical thinking process.

Music Connectors: Peer-mentoring for Students with Disabilities Workshop

Learn about "Music Connectors," a five-year, peer-to-peer mentorship program that engages high school students as teachers for students with disabilities. Explore techniques for teaching violin, guitar, and piano that enable students to create music through low-tech adaptations.

Poetic and Sound Arts in Movement Workshop

Explore music, puppetry, poetry, movement, and visual arts in this multidisciplinary workshop on "storytelling." Working as an ensemble, develop both confidence and competence in a variety of inclusive art forms. This interactive workshop responds to the specific needs of each individual using both improvisation and movement as the basis for collective artistic creation and expression.

Process Drama: A Portal to Inclusion Lecture

Two of the world's foremost researchers in Process Drama introduce participants to the basics of its methodology. Often described as "Drama for the participants rather than the audience," Process Drama provides a creative portal to inclusion. This approach to inclusive arts education makes meaning through the fictional circumstances of drama.

Teaching Curriculum Inclusively Through the Arts Lecture

Arts integration addresses the needs of all learners and increases learning by engaging students in the creative process. Teaching Artists play a unique role in facilitating standards-based curriculum through integrated arts-based residencies. VSA Ohio will share its experiences in successfully bringing arts integration into secondary education classrooms and demonstrate evidence of the impact on students' standardized test scores.

Teaching Project for Inclusive Dance Lecture

Through the development of an infrastructure for dance teachers, any teaching artist can create a welcoming environment for students of all ability levels. The Teaching Project for Inclusive Dance study examines developing strategies for the dance classroom, using improvisation, and technique. Background, methodology, strategies, and results will all be reviewed in this session.

The Power of Lines Workshop

Sometimes it is something as simple as a line that can inspire one to make a new discovery or create a piece of art. This workshop will harness your creative power in a drawing workshop that asks participants to consider how any available tool can inspire great ideas. Through doodling and repetitive line-drawing explore the endless possibilities of the imagination.

Visual Artists with Disabilities' Professional Experiences Lecture

Susan Maley, SWAHS, University of Queensland (Australia)

Review 21 interviews with practicing visual artists from Australia and the United States and examine the preparation and practice, adaptations in making art, marketing strategies, and personal experience of disability. Discuss the influences on their art's conceptualization and constraints caused by physical barriers and social attitudes. Through the interviews, the artists also address their connections with and perceptions of arts and disability organizations in both the USA and Australia.

Integrated Arts Multiple Intelligences Workshop

The Integrated Arts Multiple Intelligences curriculum empowers educators to celebrate the whole child by integrating the arts across the curriculum, recognizing and valuing each student's multiple intelligences. This interactive workshop models standards-based integrated arts lessons. Participants will be given lesson plans as well as a list of suggestions for incorporating the arts across the curriculum along with a companion DVD/CD.

Light Writers: Photography for All Abilities Workshop

Explore photography concepts as visual literacy, technical skills, and post-processing methods and examine the steps that lead to the success of the Light Writers program.

Multiple Intelligences and Theater Arts Workshop

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory fully embraces theater and interactive arts-in-education, uncovering eight core intelligences: linguistic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, logical-mathematical, and naturalistic. In this participatory workshop, mainly designed for the primary education environment, joyfully access these intelligences using theatrical, hands-on Multiple Intelligences activities.

Music Auditory Training and Language Development Lecture

Traditional American Blues—Everyone Join In! Workshop

Blues, as a form of American music, has been represented in nearly all art forms—from sculpture to film, poetry to painting. Learn the basic chording formula for traditional 12-bar blues, and the general practice for lyric composition. Create your own blues choruses. No previous music experience is necessary to participate in this music-making experience.
