In honor of the Memorial Year of the Hungarian Victims of the Holocaust, Grammy-winning NY-based klezmer trumpeter Frank London of the Klezmatics and Zita Vadasz of the Balassi Institute curate a special musical program that highlights the musical traditions of Jewish life in historical Hungary as a memento to the hundreds of thousands of martyrs from Hungary who were murdered in the Holocaust. Presented by Balassi Institute - Hungarian Cultural Center, New York, with additional support from the Embassy of Hungary. IN THE TERRACE THEATER. Part of the citywide European Month of Culture.

Having served as sideman to the likes of Terence Blanchard and Robert Glasper, Hodge firmly steps out as leader as the New York Times states, “with roots in gospel, jazz and R&B….bearing earnest intentions and a glow of transparent optimism.” Part of Blue Note at 75.

An all-star group of Washington, DC-based musicians—Elijah Jamal Balbed, tenor/soprano saxophones, Musical Director, Lyle Link, alto saxophone/flute, Kenny Rittenhouse, trumpet, Raynel Frazier, trombone, Tim Whalen, piano, Eliot Seppa, bass, and Harold Summey, drums—plays a variety of compositions recorded on the legendary record label. The compositions are from various Blue Note records and are arranged by several members of the band, including a special tribute to Butch Warren (house bass player for Blue Note Records 1960-64, and Washington, DC legend). Benin-native guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke--a current Blue Note Records artist whose most recent release Heritage was produced by labelmate Robert Glasper—performs with bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth. Loueke stands out in a crowded field of musicians with his trademark sound which “fuses traditional African music with modern jazz harmonies, unique vocal inflections, and complex time signatures” (NPR). Cuban-born American pianist Fabian Almazan performs selections from his newest album Rhizome (released March 2014 on Blue Note/ArtistShare), complete with string quartet (Megan Gould, violin; Tomoko Omura, violin; Karen Waltuch, viola; Noah Hoffield, cello) and jazz trio (Linda Oh, bass; Henry Cole, drums). “Fabian pushes the envelope in ways that excite people,” says trumpeter Terence Blanchard. “He’s someone who takes all of his experiences around the world in different forms of music, and uses them to create something special.” Part of Blue Note at 75.
