About the Artist

Photo of Bowen McCauley Dance

Bowen McCauley Dance is a contemporary dance company founded in 1996 by Lucy Bowen McCauley. Over the years this Arlington, Virginia based company has become known for presenting the finest dancers that the area has to offer in sophisticated and refined dance productions. The company has become known for the quirkiness, offbeat humor, and exuberantly uncodified movement of its founder. The company receives ongoing support from the Arlington County Cultural Affairs Division and the Arlington Arts Commission.

Lucy Bowen McCauleyÆs choreography has been called a skilled blending of modern danceÆs inventiveness of movement and balletÆs delight in order and style û graceful, often witty, and always thoughtful. It has been performed by, among others, DC Dance Theater, the Washington School of Ballet, Manassas Dance Company and Arlington Dance Theater. Lucy and the company are recipients of numerous grants and awards for artistic excellence. She received her early dance training in Indianapolis at the Jordan School of Music. At eighteen she moved to New York to study on scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School and dance for the Joffrey Concert Group. Afterward, she toured with the Maryland Ballet and the Virginia State Ballet. During her many years in New York, she studied ballet and modern dance with teachers such as David Howard, Finis Jhung, Igal Perry, Milton Myers, and Nina Wiener. She moved to the DC area in 1987 to dance for DC Contemporary Dance Theater and, later, for modern dance visionary Daniel West.
