DALLAS CHIEF EAGLE, JR.

About the Artist

Dallas Chief Eagle, Jr., a member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe, has been a Hoopdancer for 36 years. In l983 he earned a B.S. in Art Education from the University of South Dakota and received his M.A. at the same university in Counseling, Guidance and Personnel Services. He holds membership in the American Association of Counseling and Development, the National Art Therapy Association, the South Dakota Indian CounselorsÆ Association(of which he was President for two terms); and the Medicine Wheel Association, Big Horn Mountains. He was also a First Place Winner in the Reno Red Cloud Memorial Hoop Dance Contest, Oglala Fair in 1997, and in 1996 he took First Place in the Senior Division of the World Hoop Dance Contest in Phoenix, Arizona. At the present time he is an Artist-In-Schools with the Utah Arts Council.

Dallas Chief Eagle is also a storyteller, touring artist and director of the Hoop Dance Academy on the Pine Ridge Reservation. ôNurturing the Tree of Lifeö is a Lakota-style hoop dance performed with 26 hoops. Highlights of his performances include a segment on the importance of the Hoop Dance and a PeopleÆs Hoop Dance, with 300 hoops provided. The Chief Eagles have performed throughout the world at powwows, conferences, schools and festivals.
