About the Artist

Hakim Traïdia (Besbes, 1956), better known as Hakim, is a Dutch theatre artist, who among the general public (especially children) is mainly known for his role in “Sesamstraat” (Sesame Street). Hakim followed theatre and pantomime training in France and in Holland, where he has been living since 1979. Though his role in Sesamstraat brought him fame as a national kids’ hero, his performance in Sesamstraat is only the tip of the iceberg - he also performs in other shows on television and theatre, tells stories and writes books.

Hakim developed a gift for telling stories during his youth in Algeria. He grew up in a world without television, where story-telling played an important role. His father and uncles were great storytellers. To make sure that these stories wouldn't be forgotten, Hakim wrote them down, and in 1996 they were published as a book called: "De zandkroon" (The Sand Crown). For this book, Hakim received a prestigious award in Dutch literature (the "Vlag en Wimpel" by the “Griffeljury”). In 2001, he published another book, based on his performance in his show “Sinbad the Sailor.

In his one man shows, Hakim attracts attention because of his original and disarming look at our society. His first program "Mohamlet" was a huge success and so was his next show “Bubblegum.” During 2007, Hakim wrote and played in the musical "Ali Baba," and created the theatre performance of "Achmed van Oranje," showing an original view on the multicultural society. He continued his career on TV in a show where immigrants are taught the Dutch customs in a playful way. In 2007, Hakim was awarded the "E. du Perron price" by the community and the University of Tilburg.
