About the Artist
The Washington National Opera Institute at American University is a summer training program for highly motivated high school singers and accompanists age 15-18. The Opera Institute curriculum focuses on Italian art songs and includes classes in drama, movement, yoga, ear training, sight singing, opera history, and Italian diction. Students participate in master classes, opera scenes, individual vocal coaching, and group and individual lessons. Opera professionals present workshops on relevant topics including auditioning, college and résumé preparation, and vocal health. The students participate in several performances focused on opera scenes and Italian art songs.

Participants who have just completed the Washington National Opera’s Opera Institute, an intensive three-week training program, perform a variety of well-known, semi-staged opera scenes in English. Select individuals also present Italian art songs.

Professional opera company staff and artists engage students in a 3-week program of workshops designed to develop well-rounded musicianship and further professional development, culminating in a recital of Italian art song. In conjunction with the Summer Opera Theater Company and the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America.
