Gang on the Roof

Gang on the Roof takes place in May 1966 aboard the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Rutherford B. Hayes. It is based on the true story of an alleged shipboard mutiny by African-American sailors during the Vietnam War.

Dan Owens was born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts. He graduated from UMass-Boston with a BA in English and also attended the Yale School of Drama and Harvard Graduate School of Education, from which he received his MEd. His plays include Emily T., Sandra Lane, Not, The Michigan, and the musical The More You Get--The More You Want. His work has been produced by the New African Company, the People's Theater of Cambridge, the New Federal Theater, the Negro Ensemble, and the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center. Mr. Owens was twice a participant in the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference and is also the recipient of a Rockefeller Grant for Playwriting. His most recent work is the book for a new musical entitled Little AM, which was first produced by the George Street Playhouse and later at the Westport Summer Playhouse in Connecticut.
