The Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition is hailed as the most prestigious jazz competition in the world, launching the careers of some of today's jazz sensations including Joshua Redman, Jane Monheit, Marcus Roberts, Roberta Gambarini, Tierney Sutton, Joey DeFrancesco, Chris Potter, Gretchen Parlato, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ben Williams, and many others. This year's Competition will feature the saxophone and will be judged by an illustrious panel including Jane Ira Bloom, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, and Bobby Watson.
As part of the year's Competition, TMIJ will present an All-Star Gala Concert that will feature performances by legendary jazz masters and internationally renowned artists, including Brian Blade, Terri Lyne Carringtion, Kurt Elling, Roy Hargrove,and John Patitucci, among others. The evening's co-hosts will include Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk, Jr. John Beasley will serve as the evening's musical director. All proceeds from the Gala Concert will support the Institute's public school jazz education programs in Washington, D.C. and across the country.
