As the dark clouds of fascism began to cover Europe, Sweden sought to maintain its neutrality--a position that was totally unacceptable for Torgny Segerstedt (Jesper Christensen), a crusading journalist whose strident denunciations of Hitler and his ilk drew the ire of both the Prime Minister and the King, both hoping to keep the country out of any impending conflict. One of Sweden's finest filmmakers, Jan Troell (The Emigrants) makes this passionate era come to vibrant life, detailing not only Segerstedt's political battles but also his complex emotional entanglement with the Jewish wife of his best friend and publisher, beautifully played by Pernilla August.
