KENNEDY CENTER DEBUT
"Gorgeous. The Swedes' riskiness and speed are breathtaking."
--The Boston Globe
Having transitioned from solely classical ballet to an additional focus on contemporary dance, Sweden's GöteborgsOperans Danskompani (formerly The Göteborg Ballet), comprised of 40 dancers, is now the largest modern dance company in the Nordic region and tours nationally and internationally.
It brings Passion, a program featuring three contemporary works created on the company. Created by award-winning choreographer Örjan Andersson, Beethoven's 32 Variations allows the dancers to explore Beethoven's music in fresh, poignant ways. OreloB, choreographed by Kenneth Kvarnström, is inspired by the mechanical nature of the rhythms of Ravel's Boléro, focusing on the dancers as components in a "musical motor" that pulses, unfolds, and grows. Nick Cave's music plays a central part in Stij Celis's Your Passion is Pure Joy to Me, in which seven dancers explore the possibility of finding hope and consolation in the wake of despair.
