The Kennedy Center is proud to present a new performance space, housed in the Center's Atrium. The Supersized Jazz Club features a dance floor, sofas, chairs, and open seating.
Dixeland, swing, ragtime, stride…whatever you want to call it, this early 20th century jazz groove was the soundtrack of the original dance party! Fats Waller, one of the central proliferators of stride piano, is honored in Jason Moran's free Performing Arts for Everyone presentation of Fats Waller Dance Party with vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello. This modern take on the music of Fats Waller (his familiar jazz tunes include "This Joint Is Jumpin'" and "Ain't Misbehavin'") looks back at this jazz tradition for which Waller was such a seminal figure. The New York Times calls it "joyous and foolish and graceful: somehow both exceptional and no big deal."
Beginning at 8:30 p.m., get ready for the dance party with choreographer Maija Garcia and performing artists of Organic Magnetics, as they lead a "Soul of Jazz" Dance Class, a style that fuses contemporary dance with jazz and Afro-Latin rhythms.
NOTE: Free wristbands, required for entry to both the dance class and the Fats Waller Dance Party, will be distributed one (1) per person on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8 p.m. in the Nations Gallery.
