This part-gothic thriller, part-apocalyptic drawing room comedy comes to Washington from Canada's foremost puppet theater artist, Ronnie Burkett. With music by John Alcorn and lighting design by Kevin Humphrey, Penny Plain tells the story of a frail but indomitable old boarding house owner who sits in her overstuffed armchair, waiting for the world to end. She is blind, but hears plenty about the state of mankind. When her companion dog leaves to live as a man, Penny's end-of-days vigil is interrupted by survivalists, a serial killer, a cross-dressing banker, and other bizarre characters seeking sanctuary as Mother Earth plans to reclaim her ground.
