Åland comprises Fasta Åland, the main island, and an archipelago of over 6,500 skerries and islands. Originally conceived for an exhibit at the Åland Art Museum in 2003, Juha Pykäläinen's wooden sculptures of elk can now be found in more than 30 locations on the Åland Islands. They can be used as hunting towers or as environmental art to make the landscape fun and alive. The latter will be the case during Nordic Cool 2013, where three of Pykäläinen's elk towers will be found on the grounds of the Kennedy Center for the duration of the festival.
