Asian American Music Society's 2015 Competion Winners' Holiday Concert

Winners of the Asian American Music Society’s 13th International Competition for woodwind, piano, strings, and voice perform on the Millennium Stage. The competition encompasses elementary, middle, and high school students. It is open to everyone, not only Asians or Americans, and participants are encouraged to perform works by Asian composers.

Continuing the tradition of celebrating the best in emerging talent, Millennium Stage presents In Song: Celebrating Youth Voices, as part of its new James A. Johnson Young Artist Series, made possible by Target. The ongoing program will showcase exemplary, local youth from representative Kennedy Center Partnership Schools in Washington, D.C. and collaborating youth organizations. 

The evening’s performances will feature vocal music.

Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra: Harold Lloyd

Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra presents a night of ragtime orchestra accompaniment with two screenings of classic Harold Lloyd silent films. Get Out and Get Under (1920) is based off a 1913 popular song. The film features Harold’s misadventures with his car, a Ford model T. Never Weaken (1921) is the third of his “thrill” comedies, where a series of events leave Harold stranded on top of an uncompleted skyscraper.

The Lovejoy Group presents The Giant that Lived in the Shadows, honoring Billy Strayhorn as the genius behind Ellington, his life, and his music. The performance is an exploration of Strayhorn’s soulful and haunting melodies, captivating harmonies, and sophisticated lyrics. His music seduced and challenged the musical world while expanding the artistic vocabulary of American society.
