A native of Hankins, New York, American baritone Christian Bowers is in his first season of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. He made his WNO debut as the Army Surgeon in The Force of Destiny (2013) and was also seen as Stubb in Moby-Dick (2014). He will soon be seen as Clyde Griffiths in An American Tragedy at the Glimmerglass Festival. He recently completed his final year as a resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. He was a young artist with Santa Fe Opera for two seasons, where he performed the role of Sciarrone in Tosca and covered the title role of Abdul in Menotti's The Last Savage. Recent performances include Renato in Un ballo in maschera with the Academy of Vocal Arts and Masetto in Don Giovanni with Opera Colorado. He has been recognized at several prestigious competitions, including the Houston Grand Opera Eleanor McCollum Vocal Competition (finalist, 2013), the George London Foundation (finalist, 2013), the Mario Lanza vocal competition (second prize, 2011), and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (district winner, 2011 and 2012). In past seasons he has performed the roles of Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Belcore in L'elisir d'amore, Belaev in A Month in the Country, Count Danilo in The Merry Widow, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Marcello in La bohème, Masetto in Don Giovanni, the Clock/Cat in L'enfant et les sortilèges, Ipparco in L'Egisto, King Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Hermann in Les contes d'Hoffmann, Count Dominik and Lamoral in Arabella, and Ottone in L'incoronazione di Poppea.
