About the Washington National Opera

Washington National Opera Chorus

The members of the Washington National Opera Chorus are some of the finest singers in the Mid-Atlantic area. The company draws from an established pool of about 100 very talented singers to meet the needs of each production. Many WNO choristers have solo careers in oratorio and opera outside of the company locally, regionally, and nationally. Several members have been hired to sing small roles and even principal roles with WNO. Since the inception of The Opera Society of Washington to today, the chorus has been led by Paul Calloway, Norman Scribner, William Huckaby, Randolph Mauldin, Stephen Crout, Alan Nathan and since 1997, Steven Gathman.

They have collaborated with conductors Julius Rudel, John Mauceri, Cal Stewart Kellogg, Music Director Emeritus Heinz Fricke, current Music Director Philipp Auguin, Plácido Domingo, Emmanuel Villaume and various others. There have been many memorable collaborations with stage directors such as Frank Corsaro, Bliss Hebert, Gian Carlo Menotti, Sonja Frisell, Stephen Lawless, Marta Domingo, Paolo Miccichè and current Artistic Director Francesca Zambello.

The chorus sings in seven languages: English, Italian, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Czech. It has also garnered sterling reviews from the local and national press.
