Washington, D.C., is the birthplace of this exciting and diverse all-female band. Be’la Dona is so unique in their musical presentation that they have branded their style as “Sensual Crank.” This unique style commands an impressive drawing power, attracting many beloved fans and local promoters. Versatility is the group’s main attribute. They have the ability to play any music genre, from rock, R&B, gospel, pop, jazz, and, of course, their hometown music go-go. Large venue or small venue is not a problem for the ladies of Be’la Dona because they approach every show with the same intensity. Be’la Dona captivates their audience and delivers the best performance each and every time.
As the ladies of Be’la Dona continue to perform in the DC area and abroad, their acclaim and demand is growing as new ears hear their unique style. The multi-talented visionary, DJ, founder, and CEO of Black Girls Rock!, Beverly Bond collaborates with the Kennedy Center to present Rock Like a Girl, a signature Bond-Vision Media™ production that celebrates women’s contributions to the art and culture of hip-hop. The program includes performances by a diverse group of female artists from around the world, including legendary rap artist MC Lyte, critically acclaimed lyricist Jean Grae, Grammy Award–winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari, French Chilean MC Ana Tijoux, North Carolina MC Rapsody, a special appearance by the multi-talented Grammy Award–winning MC, singer, and song-writer Ms. Lauryn Hill, and other special guests! D.C.’s own all-girl go-go band, Be’la Dona, serves as the house band with DJ Beverly Bond on the ones-and-twos. Together, these women show what it means to “rock like a girl.” Please join us for a post-show discussion with artists, academics, and activists that encourages dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media.
