NEWORKS: Philadelphia Community Mass

11/25/2018 at 6:00 PM

Inspired by MASS by Leonard Bernstein, Philadelphia Community Mass is a musical/devised-theatrical work that explores anew the relevance of faith in our times, featuring commissioned works by four African American composers with roots in Philadelphia—Evelyn Simpson Curenton, Rollo Dilworth, Ruth Naomi Floyd, and Jay Fluellen. Conceived and artistically directed by Nolan Williams, Jr., the Philadelphia Community Mass reflects the broad diversity of African American sacred music traditions, punctuated with dialogue rendered by two speakers, a celebrant and skeptic, along with immersive congregational spoken refrains.

Presented by The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and NEWorks Productions

The Philadelphia Community Mass was commissioned by the Mann Center for the Performing Arts and curated by NEWorks Productions.
