Maria Basile


(Founder, Co-Artistic Director, Choreographer, Dancer) is a found- ing member and co-artistic director for sjDANCEco. She  is the 2010 recipient of Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Fellowship for Performance, received the 2009 Individual Artist Special Recognition award for her choreographic contributions in Santa Clara County and was a 2009 “Isadora Duncan Award” nominee for Best Performance in Birthing the Ascension. Maria was recently honored by Bay Area Dance Watch with the 2014 LiveBlessay Award for Best Dancer/Actress. Recent performances:  17th    annual  Taipei  International  Arts  Festival,  (which  includes her Tango Fatal and Limon’s Moor’s Pavane), OCEAN with Spector Dance, Opus to theSoul with Margaret Wingrove and Mosaic with Karl Schaffer. She has choreographed for the Cabrillo Music Festival, Opera San José, Midsummer Mozart Festival, De Anza College, San Jose City College and San José State’s University Dance Theatre.  Highlights of Maria’s career have been as a charter member of The Limón West Dance Project of San Jose, CA and as part of The Limón Dance Com- pany’s critically acclaimed '97–'98 50th Anniversary World Tour, as well as USA team member in The XIII Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Varna, Bulgaria. Maria teaches Ballroom/ Latin, Modern, and Ballet at De Anza College, San Jose City College, and San José State University. She received her BS in Dance from the University of Oregon.

sjDANCEco’s performance demonstrates the power and poetry of dance through José Limón’s “The Exiles,” inspired by the exodus during and following WWII, to Maria Basile’s  “The Upward Spiral,” new work by Gabriel Mata that merges dance and physical theater, and a group collaborative that explores the multi-generational experiences of its cast.
